The 2020 IDSA Leadership Institute is intended for mid-career or senior physicians ascending into leadership roles within the near term or seeking to address areas of need in an existing leadership role.  Unlike other physician-leader training programs, the IDSA Leadership Institute is designed specifically for infectious diseases and HIV specialists.

IDSA seeks to create a personally, professionally, and academically diverse cohort each year and, as such, cannot provide an ideal candidate profile. All interested individuals should review the Eligibility Requirements and Program Information sections to determine if the program is the right fit for their training needs.

All Leadership Institute candidates must meet the following criteria at the time of application:

  • Active IDSA membership
  • Engaged in clinical practice of infectious diseases, clinical or basic research, administration, teaching in infectious diseases, public health, or a related field as primary professional activity
  • History of substantive service to the profession locally, regionally, or nationally
  • Minimum of five years relevant professional experience
  • Evidence of deep intellectual curiosity and growth mindset

It is important that our learning community represents the full diversity of the IDSA membership. As such, we strongly encourage women and individuals under-represented in medicine to apply.

Applicants must submit a complete IDSA Leadership Institute application, including:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Personal Statement
  • One (1) professional recommendation
    • See Recommendation Information for additional information

The application for the 2020 IDSA Leadership Institute is now closed. You can check the status of your submitted application using the IDSA Foundation: Application Management System.

Applicants are required to secure one significant recommendation to the apply to the IDSA Leadership Institute.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to review our Recommendation Guidance with their potential recommender at least three weeks before the application deadline. Applications missing a recommendation will be marked as incomplete and disqualified from consideration.

Recommendation Guidance

As part of their training, Leadership Institute attendees will be required to identify a leadership challenge within their place of employment and work with their program peers to design a plan that addresses that issue. The success of such projects often hinges on the institutional/organizational support available to the participant. To ensure that all participants have the support necessary to participate in the Leadership Institute and implement their leadership project and training goals, we require that recommenders be stakeholders with a sustained, professional relationship with the applicant, familiar with the leadership project the applicant is proposing, and in a position to support the implementation of the project.

Recommenders are required to submit a letter of recommendation and complete a competency evaluation form. Effective recommenders will meaningfully address the following questions in their recommendation letter:

  1. What supports and obstacles exist to implementing the applicant’s leadership project?
  2. What are the applicant’s professional strengths and weaknesses?
  3. What are the applicant’s training needs?
  4. What are the applicant’s professional ambitions? Are they likely to achieve them?

Recommendation letters should be no more than three pages. Recommendations must be submitted in the PDF format and uploaded through the application management system. Competency evaluation forms are also completed through the application management system.

Finally, recommenders will be asked to complete two, short progress evaluation surveys. The first will be sent approximately six-months into the program, and the second will be sent at the program’s conclusion. The surveys should take approximately 15 to 20 minutes each.

No recommendations will be accepted via email, mail, or fax.
