ABIM: What You Need to Know to Prep for Changes in 2019

The American Board of Internal Medicine launched its Knowledge Check-In, the revised approach to certification assessments, this spring with Internal Medicine and Nephrology specialties. As a reminder, the Knowledge Check-In is being rolled out over a three-year period and will be an available option for Infectious Diseases and several other subspecialties in 2019. Below are deadlines and resources to help you prepare for the upcoming changes.

Taking the Traditional MOC (10-Year) Exam in 2019? Exam dates are:

  • May 15, 2019 (Registration Dec. 1, 2018 through Feb. 2, 2019)
  • Oct. 24, 2019 (Registration Dec. 1, 2018 through Aug. 15, 2019)

Taking the Knowledge Check-In in 2019? Exam dates are:

  • May 4 or 9 (Registration Dec. 1, 2018 through Mar. 15, 2019)
  • Nov.12 or 15 (Registration Dec. 1, 2018 through Sept.15, 2019)

Not sure which is the best option? Read about Knowledge Check-In scenarios and which physicians would benefit from taking the Check-In in 2019 in this past IDSA News article.

UpToDate®, the “open book” resource, can be used by those taking either the 10-year exam OR the Knowledge Check-In. It can also be used as a practice tool, and diplomates can earn MOC credits for using it as practice.

Each diplomate must earn 100 MOC points over a five-year period. You do not need to earn the points before sitting for the exam; however, you can lose your certification if you don’t earn the points within the five-year period. In addition, you must complete at least one MOC activity every two years to be reported as participating in MOC.
