The Infectious Diseases Society of America participated in the 71st World Health Assembly in Geneva during the week of May 21 -25, presenting and joining statements reflecting IDSA priorities.
IDSA presented this statement on May 23, supporting the recommendations of an expert review panel at the assembly on the global strategy and plan of action on public health, innovation and intellectual property.
On May 24, IDSA presented this statement, in collaboration with the Global Health Council, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, the Global Health Technologies Coalition and Partners in Health, commending efforts to prepare for the upcoming United Nations High-Level Meeting on ending TB, and supporting efforts towards a political declaration that includes ambitious targets on finding a missing 4 million cases, scaling up treatment and prevention, and increasing investments in research and development for diagnostic, preventive and treatment tools toward those goals. The statement also urged the inclusion of child-specific targets, addressing antimicrobial resistance in a political declaration based in human rights, equity and medical science.
In addition, IDSA joined the Global Health Council, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and Management Sciences for Health, in this statement presented on May 23, calling on the World Health Organization to accelerate work towards strengthening health systems, workforces, and other core capacities needed during health emergencies, and calling on international donors to work with WHO to speed implementation of national action plans against outbreaks.
